Didja Know?

MrPages on August 2nd, 2008

A little bit of keyboard trivia has improved my life more than I care to admit.

Did you know that if you type something into the URL bar of your browser, you can hit CTRL-ENTER and it will add “.com” and go to the site?

It’s true!

Just type “cnn” into the URL bar, and hit CTRL-ENTER and you go straight to “http://cnn.com”.

If you use Firefox you can make it even easier by hitting CTRL-L to go to the URL bar, then type your word and hit CTRL-ENTER. You don’t even have to move your hand to click the mouse! This has saved me at least 50 calories a day worth of energy expenditure, I’m sure.

Places like Lifehacker (that’s CTRL-L, lifehacker, CTRL-ENTER) are always touting the benefits of keyboard shortcuts for commonly used things, but I really haven’t caught on much. For some weird reason, though, this one has made me very happy.

Yes, a keyboard shortcut gives me a little bit of glee every time I use it.

Hi. I’m MrPages. I’m a geek.

Anyone have any other little-known favorite keyboard shortcuts?

  1. Get outta town! That is so cool!

  2. My favorite keyboard shortcut is CTRL-+ to increase the font size of the web page I am viewing. I find that people are using smaller and smaller font sizes these days (it couldn’t possibly be that my eyes are getting older)…

  3. I use “F6 - lifehacker - ENTER”. That’s one less finger, twice, which saves an additional 5 calories. Maybe the F6 key’s a Linux thing, but I’m pretty sure all versions of Firefox automatically add “www” and “.com” when you hit ENTER (provided such a site exists).

Anyway, though it’s not an uncommon shortcut at all, I do NOT miss IE’s CTRL+F find-on-page feature at all. Slash all the way, baby.

  4. Galoot, I don’t think just hitting enter adds www and .com, it goes to Google and goes to the most applicable hit. Look at the activity on the bottom bar, you see google as the first lookup, then the page you want to go to. Usually the same as just adding .com, but not always.

Try typing “trap” and hitting enter. There is no solid hit for it in google, so it goes to the google search page for “trap”.

The slash for quickfind is a new shortcut for me, I like it. Thanks. :)

  5. I don’t know if this is little-known or not, but my absolute favorite shortcut WindowKey-M to minimize everything and get back to the desktop. Ooo, so efficient!

  6. Ash, that’s awesome. I use the icon shortcut to clear the desktop all the time (in my taskbar).

Lyndon - did you know that you can hold CTRL and use the mousewheel to change font size?

  7. Just wanted to say that you are all speaking a foreign language as far as I’m concerned. I’m feeling very inadequate right now :-)

  8. But Barbara, if I recall correctly, you can successfully host 17 children and 4 mothers for a lovely luncheon and afternoon tea! You parent and home school seven children under ten. You sing on the church worship team. And you occasionally make your own bread.

Nothin’ to feel “inadequate” about at all!!

  9. that was the nicest thing ever. Sending you a hug. Many thanks.

  10. Barbara, I agree with MrsPages! Even if you weren’t involved in anything else, the fact that you’re raising your kids to be godly people is the farthest thing possible from inadequate!!! (and the same message also applies to MrsPages)
