A Keen Observation
A user named “xebeche_tzu” on a message board discussing cheesy car modifications (like the big coffee can exhaust pipes and those silly big wheels) came up with this comment, and I thought it rather astute.
I find it very telling of the true nature of how society is changing by examining the trends in auto modifications. Fifty years ago, young people modified their cars to go faster and handle better. This lasted until the mid 80’s. Now, kids are 90% concerned with how cars look. They dump money into superficial changes, many designed to mimic performance enhancement instead of actually achieving it. They drive slow, gaudy pieces of cr*p with great pride.
We have moved from enhancements of substance to pure superficiality and self-deception. In cars, too.
